The Taanteatro Ecoperformance Workshop introduces the concept and practice of Ecoperformance (Book, Journal, Article), aimed at artists seeking to transcend anthropocentric representation practices. Within the methodological framework of Choreographic Theatre of Tensions (Taanteatro), Baiocchi and Pannek delve into the psychophysical dynamics of performative perception, presence, and interaction, imparting Taanteatro concepts such as tension, ecoporality, and schizopresence. The workshop concludes with an ecoperformative improvisation.

The festival is a creative response to the environmental and political challenges of the 21st century, showcasing films by interdisciplinary artists that explore the tensions between environment, body, and origin.

The Ecoperformance Film Selection features screenings of selected short films by Asian, African, American, Australian, and European artists at the intersection of cinema, performing arts, and ecology. After the screening, there will be an opportunity for a discussion with the festival directors.

MAURA BAIOCCHI

The Brazilian choreographer, dancer, director, and actress Maura Baiocchi is the São Paulo-based founding director of the Taanteatro Company (1991) and creator of the Taanteatro or choreographic theatre of tensions*.

She is the author of several books (with Wolfgang Pannek) on her performing arts approach, including Choreographic Theatre of Tensions: Forces & Forms (2020), and founding director of the International Ecoperformance Film Festival.

Baiocchi’s career began in the 1970s in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. In the late 1980s, she became a pioneer of Butoh dance in her country and wrote the first book on Butoh in Portuguese in 1995 (Butoh Dança Veredas D’Alma). Subsequently, Baiocchi focused on developing Taanteatro. The award-winning performer has created over eighty choreographies, plays, and performances and presented her works in Argentina, Belgium, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, Mozambique, Russia, and the United States.

She has also appeared in feature films and short films. Baiocchi occasionally works at the National University of Brasília and holds an MA in Communication and Semiotics from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo – PUC.

WOLFGANG PANNEK

The German author, director, performer, producer, and editor Wolfgang Pannek began his career in Bremen. In 1992, he moved to São Paulo, where he has since worked with Maura Baiocchi as co-director of the Taanteatro Companhia.

Pannek has directed major Taanteatro stage productions and created and coordinated international projects, including Butoh and Research Theatre Festival (1995), Artaud 100 Years (1996), The Conquest (1996/96), Mazola-Brazil Cultural Exchange (2005), and Hans-Thies Lehmann Brazil Tour (2010), Artaud Occupation (2016), Deleuze Occupation (2017), Antonin Artaud’s The Theatre and the Plague (2020), APOKÁLYPSIS (2021), and Ecoperformance Expedition (2022).

Since 2021, Pannek has been the production director of the International Ecoperformance Film Festival. Alongside Baiocchi, he has co-authored several books on Taanteatro. Pannek has also acted in series and films produced by HBO Brazil, TV Globo, and Amazon Prime. He holds an MA in Philosophy, Psychology, and Literature from the FernUniversität Hagen, Germany.
